What a trip down memory lane! I was a huge Martha Plimpton fan when I was young! I loved that she didn't fit the stereotypical Hollywood starlet aesthetic and she was smart, funny and gutsy. I also vowed in the 4th grade to one day marry River Phoenix 💔. And you named so many of my favorite movies from that era. Love Running on Empty, I Love You to Death, Parenthood. So good. Anyway, I have been to Tacoma a couple of times, but never knew about Bob's Java Jive. We'll be traveling around Washington this summer so I'm going to put it on my map in case we make it to Tacoma!
It's funny how the three of them were the DEAD CENTER of so much creativity at that time. I suspect Bob's Java Jive will not have changed at all. LOL. But that's part of it's charm, I think!
There is a graphic novel memoir by Mannie Murphy, I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN, about growing up in Portland, infatuation with River Phoenix, white supremacists, Van Sant, and MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO. Published in 2021. Neat book.
I agree with all your comments Brent. I saw Running on Empty on cable Foxtel here in Australia (back in 2000's) and immediately bought the DVD and re-watched it over and over. It let me down a rabbit hole of all River Phoenix movies and autobiography book from eBay. I had heard of Stand by Me, but I was probably too young when it showed in cinemas and that became a favourite too; I did manage to see The Goonies on video (back in the late 80s) and yes, couldn't believe it when Martha Plimpton (Steph) popped up as River's love interest in RoE. She's very underrated and glad you gave her the attention during your starstruck moment. Thank goodness River and Keanu weren't total ####holes and gave you 'get lost' stares or what about us vibes.
River's untimely death makes me think of Cory Monteith (from Glee fame) - both got the looks, breakthrough talent and potential but taken far too early.
Wow!!! Speechless!!
Thanks!
What a great story:) I’ve never seen Running on Empty. Just added to my list.
Thank you! I hope you like it.

Skin it!
Yeah, that both seemed very humble, which, looking back, is kind of amazing!
The Goonies is actually pretty bad as a movie, but it's still fun, and it's kinda era-defining.
Tragic about River, indeed!
