SO MUCH YES TO EVERYTHING YOU JUST WROTE ABOUT UNDERSERVED 12-16 YEAR OLDS!!! My daughter is an avid reader, has gobbled up the Wings of Fire series as well as the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, and many others. Her room is BURSTING with books. But, the moment she turned 12, she refused to shop in the "middle grade reader ages 8-12" anymore (prominently labeled that above the section, and often found right with the little kids stuff).
The YA stuff is WAAAAAYYYYY to advanced for her (not academically, but socially) with seemingly all of those books focused on sex, drugs, drinking, self-image and just way, way, WAY too much. I am super excited to see that your books focus on this age group, and definitely plan to check them all out!
It's so frustrating! Also the fact that YA isn't even really written for teens anymore.
But in fairness, It's PROJECT PAY DAY that is for that age group -- most of my other books are for older readers. GRAND & HUMBLE is another one that might work though.
