This issue is really present still and with all the backlash the LGBTQ+ community have received lately, its even more important to balance the representation in main stream media. Though ultimately i think for myself that i'd prefer the focus to be on the overall art and if anyone has a good story to tell, the narrative is all that should matter with or without LGBTQ+. :)
Yeah, this was written (for my previous website) about six years ago, and things are obviously different now. It's funny though. I see some LGBTQ art (like BROS), and I think, "My God, I HATE these characters, the main character is a horrible human being." And then you run into a whole other topic: What is good "representation"? LOL
